The Filipino debut tradition is said to have originated from the Quinceanera, a birthday celebration in Latin American countries when a girl reaches 15 or “quince”. So popular among Filipinos that even families who do not have financial means try their best to make the event happen in their own special little way and make it memorable for their daughters to treasure. It is a special event that every family hopes to celebrate. Many young girls in the Philippines feverishly look forward to having a debut party, which is a traditional Filipino coming-of-age festivity to celebrate a young woman’s 18th birthday. ![]() While Latinos have quinceaneras and Americans have Sweet 16s, my Filipino culture celebrates the “debut.” But some cultures do come close to making us feel like a true princess for a day through coming-of-age party to celebrate a young girl blossoming into a woman.
